The Short Version

I’m Joel Grayson. I’m not a licensed septic inspector — I’m a rural property owner in the Southeast who got a very expensive education in septic systems fifteen years ago when mine failed, and I’ve been obsessively learning about tanks, drainfields, and distribution boxes ever since. Over the years I’ve walked plenty of neighbors’ properties too, comparing notes on tidy half-acre lots and farms where nobody could remember where the tank was buried. Backyard Septic is where I put everything all of that taught me.

What Fifteen Years of Paying Attention Teaches You

Mostly, that septic systems don’t fail randomly. They fail because a truck parked on the drainfield every deer season. Because the tank went twelve years without pumping and solids migrated into the lines. Because somebody trusted a $20 jug of “miracle” additive instead of a $350 pump-out. I’ve stood in my own soggy backyard staring down a five-figure drainfield replacement that a little maintenance would have prevented — and that conversation with myself is the reason this site exists.

Septic advice online loves to terrify people. I don’t. Some problems are a thirty-dollar fix you can do in an afternoon; some need the pump truck or an engineer. Every guide here is clear about which is which, because the most expensive septic mistake is fixing the wrong problem.
